Essential Oil Tidbits
Balancing Immune - EOs are anti-bacterial , anti-cancerous, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti-tumoral, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and antiseptic. Essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring balance to the body. These characteristics are found in such oils as: On Guard Blend, Lemon, Thyme, Melelueca, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Pine, Oregano, Lavender and Sandalwood.
Sedative - Essential oils may also have a pronounced effect on the nervous system by producing relaxation, pain relief and relieving muscle spasm. Oils with these properties include Lavender, Rose, Geranium and Ylang Ylang.
Why would you use an essential oil that is GRAS = generally regarded as safe? Be careful selecting oils...FDA can allow 80% synthetic ingredients to an oil labeled 100% natural! doTERRA is CPTG = certified pure therapeutic grade. What does that mean? It means beyond organic, verified pure, free of fillers, pesticides and foreign contaminates.

Keeping Mindful Awareness Present in Food Choices: Buyer Beware!
So, this morning after my yoga session I went to grab a bowl of cereal. My eyes scanned the pantry and saw the sweet temptation of the kid cereal laden with sugar, or so I thought. I saw my Special K and decided to stick to my guns, but something made me pause. I gazed at the side panel and began to peruse the ingredient list and a little disappointed in the amount of protein: 2 grams. It was the same as Captain Crunch! And then I looked further at the three cereal choices I had and the shock continued...
The Special K has a list on the front of the box (right corner hidden in picture) and it lists folic acid as a highlight. Well, the so-called healthy cereal has 35%, Captain Crunch 100% and Mini Wheats 50%! I usually look at a few key areas: sugar, vitamins, fiber, protein and sometimes calories.
I can't believe I was duped! Darn you Special K! I even eat that cereal because it reminds me of a dear friend, one of my special au pairs from Chile, Fernanda.
I know these are not organic and I strive to eat healthy, but I don't go overboard. I am a pescetarian (I eat only fish, no other meat) and I do eat dairy, one of my favorite foods. Well, cheese, that is. I tried once to give it up and it lasted a day. I do not struggle with weight so I fear if I did give it up I would whither away.
Anyhow, the facts are out! They have always been there just waiting for me to read them. Blatant. Good thing I use my certified pure therapeutic grade doTERRA essential oils for overall wellness! I strengthen my immune system on a regular basis, detox and purify my home, life, studio, laundry and more!

Love...why do you LOVE it?
Bhakti is a devotional practice simply described as a practice that is love centered around God. Even if you don't have a God, I'm sure your practice is devotional in some regard whether it be spiritual, peaceful or even physically centered on redefining your own body in strength, flexibility and balance.
As you develop your own yoga practice you come to love something about it. Perhaps a particular asana or maybe just the time you take for yourself away from the daily grind. Take a moment on our Facebook page to share your "love story" in yoga. How has it changed you? When did you fall in love with it? What is your favorite asana? What is your favorite essential oil?
I will pick one lucky winner to receive this Valentine treat of doTERRA products and samples. (ships to US address only)
For more information on doTERRA please visit my website or schedule your private yoga session to experience them first hand aromatically, topically and internally.
I hope your Valentine's Day is filled with lots of LOVE!

Comparing Essential Oils (EO) with dōTERRA CPTG EO
Essential oils (EO) are getting quite the press lately and more and more people seem to know about them, already use them, or have been exposed to them in some shape or form. Just today I was getting my teeth cleaned and when I was speaking to my hygienist about how I do not take any synthetic drugs and I only use EO she chimed right in and said she had been to a class and bought an entire kit for to replace her medicine cabinet! We even use the same line.
For those not exposed to this new approach to wellness (some may call it "healthcare"), let me share a few EO facts:
- EO are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs.
- They kill bacteria and inhibit the growth of viruses.
- They enter the bloodstream within 30 seconds.
- EO are a natural antibiotic and have the ability to kill bacteria.
- EO can be used topically, aromatically, or internally (not all brands).
- EO are safer, cheaper and often more effective than modern medicine.
So that's what I want to share, what the difference is between dōTERRA CPTG (certified pure therapeutic grade) EO vs. others. I don't believe in slamming other products because I know there is something out there for everyone, but I do want to educate others on the importance of quality and process.
- The lowest grade of essential oils are synthetic and are produced in labs that have copied the components of the oil. These oils are very low quality and are used in lotions and perfumes.
- Next are food grade essential oils. These are used to flavor foods like lemon in salad dressings or cinnamon chewing gum.
- The next grade, intended for a health benefit, is therapeutic grade. This has held the standard in the essential oil industry for the last 30 years. These are the oils that are found in health food stores and used in the health industry. These oils have served well but now things are even better.
dōTERRA has established a new standard in essential oils called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (or CPTG). dōTERRA set this standard by demanding the highest quality in all aspects of growing, processing, and distributing essential oils. dōTERRA is committed to obtaining oils from the original source. So they buy oils from growers that they select, train and monitor from all over the world. For example, Lavender comes from France and Frankincense comes directly from Oman. After the oils are
obtained, they are processed in the manner best suited to that plant. Then they undergo third party testing in two independent labs to certify each batch of oil is pure. There are no synthetics, impurities or chemicals. If a batch does not meet this high standard, it does not make its way into bottles.
I have used dōTERRA EO in my yoga practice for over five years now and have replaced any synthetic medicine for myself and children with it, too! My 12-year-old daughter even carries her own travel kit of oils. Her most used oil is a blend of anise, caraway, coriander, fennel, ginger, peppermint, and tarragon to assist in a nervous and/or upset tummy as well as digestive issues. I diffuse in the home and studio, drink lemon EO daily for my immune system, use a blend of wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary for cleaning and so much more!
If you would like more information on dōTERRA, would like to purchase or schedule an in-home or office workshop, please contact MJ here.
(This information is purely opinion and not meant to be used to replace doctor recommended medicine. Always consult a doctor before using anything new as an answer to and ailment or illness.)

Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) With Patchouli Essential Oil
For those that get to enjoy (or maybe not enjoy) winter and snow, the cool days and grey skies can play a big part of our mood. Acquiring a positive mindset in the winter takes a strong individual with a strong spirit. Just the other day someone close to me said "let's hope we see the sun today!" and I said, "it's always there, you just have to be looking!". It truly is, peeking out of the clouds when you least expect or when you aren't looking so you need to keep checking if you need that reassurance that that beautiful, warm, energizing sphere still exists. Others, however, know it is always there, perhaps like a Higher Power and they don't let the grey day get them down. They look to other shining moments in a smile, a kind gesture, or maybe in nature.
But, if all else fails and hope is lost, there is Patchouli. Patchouli has traditionally been used to provide mood support and may help to reduce anxiety caused by the winter blues. It has a very rich and very herbaceous scent, and can easily be blended with other oils to create a pleasant aroma. Try blending with bergamot, cinnamon, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemongrass, myrrh, sandalwood, wild orange, and ylang ylang.
SAD may be experienced by 6 out of every 100 people in the United States, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. It is also estimated that another 10-20% may experience some mild form of SAD.
Try patchouli instead of creating more anxiety by trying to find money to get away to somewhere warm. doTERRA's oils are certified pure therapeutic grade, the purest form an oil can be. Other uses for patchouli include use as a diuretic, mosquito repellent, fever reducer as well as toning the skin and treating colds. Each essential oil has multiple uses; enjoy their many benefits and start living a life of wellness the natural way!

Mandala, Mantra and Mala: A New Cycle for a Special Season
Whether you are on the yogi path or not, you may have come across one of these three words: mantra, mandala and mala. Last Wednesday some of us began a new mandala, or cycle of prayer, for many different reasons. Perhaps you have sacrificed something special, increased alms giving or community service. I felt compelled to share the meaning of these important words to perhaps stimulate your own meditation or 40-day journey during this time of preparation (some refer to it as Lent).
Should you choose to begin a new prayer cycle, or mandala, next week or at anytime, you can use a mantra (the prayer/intention) and mala beads. So, you see, they all work together in tandem to create peace, balance and even cleanse the body and mind from impure thoughts, toxins, anxiety/stress and more!
As mentioned, the mandala is a cycle, more specifically, the natural cycle of the body. It is also defined in Sanskrit as a healing circle. Circles suggest wholeness, unity, the womb, completion and eternity. The awareness (meditation) of the Mandala can stimulate creative thinking, concentration and center us to the point where it is quiet and still. One can position a mandala image where it can be viewed while repeating a mantra (described below). Some even create alters for their mandala.
Coloring mandalas can be most beneficial for children to calm their minds and slow down their thought process. Carl Jung even used this in therapy with children to help them express themselves when words escape them.
In a meditation cycle the mandala can help bring awareness and focus toward a mantra, a prayer or intention. It can be repeated or used just once and verbalized or chanted internally. Mantras are sounds — words or phrases — that are used as an object of concentration. Common Sanskrit mantras are: Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (Om peace peace peace), Om Mani Padme Hum (difficult to translate but pertains to the jewel of the lotus), or Sat Nam (the vibration of truth). Should you be more apt to choose a prayer or intention but cannot focus on something specific, try one of these:
Focus on gratitude ~ give up complaining
Become an optimist ~ give up pessimism
Think of kind thoughts (towards yourself or others) ~ give up harsh judgments
Trust Divine Providence ~ give up worry
Be full of hope ~ give up discouragement
Turn to forgiveness ~ give up bitterness
Return good for evil ~ give up hatred
Be positive ~ give up negativism
Be more patient ~ give up anger
Become mature ~ give up pettiness
Enjoy beauty, that which surrounds you ~ give up gloom
Pray for trust ~ give up jealousy
Turn to virtue ~ give up gossiping
Hang in there! ~ give up giving up!
Lastly, mala beads are used to keep track of the number of mantras/prayers said during a mandala/meditation cycle. Just like a rosary, the beads are used to keep track of the number of prayers so you can concentrate on the prayer and just move your fingers from bead to bead without losing count. Mala beads have 108 beads.
Before getting started, consider using Sandalwood essential oil in your practice. Sandalwood assists with all kinds of prayer, meditation and spiritual worship. It teaches reverence and respect for Deity. It has been
used since ancient times for its powerful ability to calm the mind, still the
heart and prepare the spirit to commune with God. Sandalwood teaches of spiritual devotion and spiritual
sacrifice. It invites us to place all material attachments on the altar
of sacrifice so that we may truly progress spiritually. It also asks us
where our hearts are and challenges us to reorder our priorities to be in
alignment with the Divine will. Sandalwood assists us in quieting our minds so that we may hear
the subtle voice of the Spirit. It raises individuals into higher levels
of consciousness. It assists us in reaching beyond our current confines
and belief systems. For those who are ready to leave behind fame, wealth
and the need for acceptance, Sandalwood teaches true humility, devotion
and love for the Divine. Place a drop over the brow area. Inhale before meditation,
study or prayer.
I suggest using doTERRA CPTG Sandalwood, which can be purchased at my oil website.
Use these simple steps to begin your new cycle:
- Find a quiet place.
- Select soft music and light candle(s) to create peace and serenity. (optional)
- Display your mandala.
- Come to a seated asana (position/pose) cross legged or lotus.
- Close your eyes and begin to bring awareness to the breath.
- Tibetan tradition shows us the outer rings of the mandala represent fire that will purify an individual as they ready the journey of entering into the mandala itself. This is the point of entry for your meditation. The path will lead you inward to the center. Concentrate and focus on the shapes and colors and let the design and beauty sink into your being. Follow each circle inward and if you run into a dead end, just remember that not only do you want to reach the center but the meditation is also about the travel to enlightenment.
- Begin to repeat your mantra and use mala beads to keep count. (eyes can be open to view mandala or closed)
- Enjoy the many benefits of meditation and the new path you are creating.

Keep Your Resolutions on Track with a Healthy Spirit!
2013 is here and many of us have taken the wellness challenge whether it is to lose weight, reduce blood pressure or body fat or just tone up what gravity has slowly pulled down. The fitness centers and gyms are over crowded, but how long will it last? How long can YOU stay focused? Can you take it into February or even June?
The options are endless from prepackaged foods to gizmos and gadgets, but we need to think about what never changes...our spirit! Perhaps a healthy spirit is the answer to a life of wellness, not to mention happiness.
Yes, I am a believer in CPTG essential oils, but they go so much farther than assisting our physical needs. We can use them three ways: topically, internally and aromatically. I love exploring the senses especially with aromas that take us on journeys into our own hearts and minds. Many of us are too busy to allow our minds to slow down so often we need a little assistance from our nose to stimulate the brain (limbic system) to control emotions and retrieve memories. This causes chemicals to be released which make the person feel relaxed, calm, or even stimulated.
Essential oils, phytoncides and other natural volatile organic compounds (VOCs) work differently. When targeting our sense of smell they activate the limbic system and emotional centers of the brain. When applied topically (onto the skin) they activate thermal receptors and destroy microbes and fungi. Internal application may stimulate the immune system (generally in prescribed form).
Once we have calmed the body and mind we can focus on our breath and allow ourselves the peace and tranquility that only comes through meditation. Think of the Om symbol where the three lines of the "m" represent the awake state, the dream state and the sleep state. The line above (like a crescent moon) is the blockage that prevents us from achieving our potential ultimate consciousness or awareness (the dot).
So, if you cannot get to this "place" on your own why not try a CPTG (certified pure therapeutic grade) essential oil from doTERRA to help you along your journey. Only then can you move onto the rest of your life and body to bring total wellness full circle. Try these obvious steps:
1. Full Your Energy: get enough sleep, exercise and proper nutrition.
2. Choose Goals Wisely: don't over commit.
3. Be Specific (in your goals/resolutions): numbers are easy to follow.
4. Start Small: don't set yourself up for failure.
5. Make a Plan: put it on a calendar and track your goal(s).
6. Rewards: celebrate your successes!
7. Be Accountable: share with someone and let them help you stay on task.
8. Remove Temptation: but allow yourself a little wiggle room.
9. Visualize it: make a dream board, post images, motivate yourself with inspirational quotes!
10. Believe you can change: creating neural pathways to the brain can lead to change in habits!

Pure Summer Cooking with dōTERRA®
Add any of these CPTG (certified pure therapeutic grade) essential oils to your favorite recipes!
Black Pepper Essential Oil
is
extracted from the plant Piper nigrum of the Piperaceae family. The oil
is made from the unripe fruit of the plant, while white pepper for
household use, is made from the same fruit, but the berry is picked when
fully ripe and the outside layer (pericarp) is removed before drying.
The unripe, sun-dried peppercorns (fruit) are used for the extraction
of the oil, using steam distillation which produces a yield of nearly
2%.
This
warm and spicy essential oil helps to increase warmth of the body and
mind, relieving sore muscles and joints, boost the immune and digestive
system, stimulate the kidneys and disperse bruising by increasing
circulation to the skin.
Cilantro Essential Oil
The essential oil of cilantro is extracted from the leaves of the plant by a steam distillation.
The
oil itself is an antioxidant that helps control free radicals. It has
long been known that cilantro also helps in cases of indigestion. Like
other essential oils
such as eugenol (the essential oil of clove) it has bactericidal and
fungicidal properties. It may also have a chelating effect on heavy
metals. (That is it will leach heavy metals out of the system.)
Tangerine Essential Oil
Tangerine
is a wonderfully sweet, fresh and citrusy essential oil and is thought
to promote happiness, and help with nervousness and anxiety. For support of the nervous system, use in the diffuser to
surround yourself with the aroma. The aroma is very popular with
children, and can have the same relaxing effect as for adults.
Tangerine essential oil is also thought to help the digestive system, reducing flatulence - possibly related to its anti-anxiety effects. In addition, tangerine can be beneficial to the skin, used traditionally to help stretch marks and have a positive effect on cellulite.
Tangerine
has also been show to be antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic,
carminative, digestive, diuretic, hypnotic and a laxative.
Basil Essential Oil
Basil
oil is a good tonic for the treatment of nervous disorders and stress
related headaches, migraines and allergies. It is used to clear the mind
and relieve intellectual fatigue, while giving clarity and mental
strength.
It
has a beneficial action on the respiratory tract and is often used for
asthma, bronchitis and sinus infections. It furthermore is also
effective in cases of constipation, nausea, vomiting and cramp, and is
also good when used for menstrual problems.
It
helps to minimize uric acid in the blood, thus relieving gout. It is
useful in arthritis as well and when used on the skin, it helps to
control acne. In general it refreshes the skin and can also be used on
insect bites.
